If you're in a DHCP environment, you should exist able to take the MAC address this lists and compare it to your DHCP leases to see which IP accost matches.

  • the switch is able to provide you lot with the mac addresses it knows (show mac-address). Then you tin can compare those with addresses in dhcp. If y'all don't use dhcp, y'all need to ping each ip addres from your computer and arp -a will testify you the mac of the ip. There are tools to perform this at larger scale. (ip scanner).

  • Is there a fashion of doing this without the console cable? (I ask because i'one thousand remotely working, so i was hoping to admission CLI without being there).

To be honest I was hoping that logging into the browser console would give me the data I needed of what mac or ip addresses, only it doesnt really give whatsoever information other than which ports are doing what. Which is how I constitute out what ports were getting pounded.

I oasis't personally worked on 2510G'south earlier, but if it's gear up up, you should be able to SSH (or Telnet) to the management IP of the switch using PuTTY or like and login to the switch the same way yous would over a console cablevision. In one case you're logged in you should be able to run any commands you need.

Are yous using a VPN, or is the web interface open to the internet through your firewall?

  • Enable SNMP on your switches and use a tool similar Lantopolog or SPiceworks, or Trial of Solarwinds Engineer toolbox, (Or you can practice it manually), to become the MAC adress and find out what is continued to what port.

  • Also try pointing a browser at the IP address of the switch.

If those switches are similar to my 2920'south expect for the "Log In" link in the summit right, right under HP Networking.    You may have to scroll correct and up.

It is somewhat embarassing to acknowledge that I have looked at these switches for around 5 years before I saw that.

  • I've logged in via browser, but it doesnt take any IP or MAC addresses listed.

  • If you use PuTTY to connect to your switch IP, does it let you connect through Telnet to the console?

    PuTTY

  • Enable SNMP, equally mentioned, and employ one of the zillion tools to pull the info.

I don't know where it is on Procurves, but in my 18xx/19xx level switches, log into the GUI, go to the network tab and click on ARP management and it will show the IP addresses and what port they are on.

Use the CLI to look at the arp enshroud.

  • Disable the port. Wait for the phone telephone call. Probably the easiest way for one or 2 ports.

  • Assuming you have SNMP enabled yous tin can use a variety of tools to get that information. A lightweight and free tool that volition give you that (and other) info issnmpinfo.exe, information technology'southward part of the EventSentry SysAdmin Tools. Information technology's a command line tool simply should do what you want.

  • I was just half kidding near waiting for the phone call, but irresolute the switch config, enabling SNMP, installing a program to read the SNMP is a very long, complicated way to go for a guy who can't figure out what endpoint is connected to a switch port. It's similar telling a homeowner who wants to dig a hole the proper techniques for operating a backhoe.

    Here's the very simple manner.

    1. Get the program netscan.exe and scan your IP range. Note what devices are agile. Print-screen if you want to.

    ii. Disable the switch port.

    3. Run some other instance of netscan.exe. Note what device is missing on this instance than is on the first instance.

    That'southward your device.

  • or just look at the arp table on the switch which can be washed in 10 seconds via the GUI or CLI

That'll tell him the MAC, merely non the IP. He'd then accept to ping his unabridged range and run arp -a | find "mac of device" to notice the IP. That'southward assuming it's reachable past him and is in the aforementioned network equally his PC.

  • My HP switches show the IP and MAC address used by each port.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • "Loftier Collision" ways you probably take switchports configured to "100 Full" instead of "Automobile Auto".
You lot don't really demand to play with the PC until you lot've played with the switchport config to see if you tin can make things change that way.

And the "brand information technology break and so they come and observe you" is often a valid approach, especially if you are pressed for time with competing priorities. It's broken anyway, and when they ring you tin say, "Did you notice your PC as sometimes getting super deadening?" and they volition be encouraged that yous know what you are doing.

  • In that location is one particular user that is finding their pc to be extremely ho-hum. I've checked it over and information technology does seem to be a network issue. I've logged in and checked and I've seen that the port they are on shows Excessive CRC/Alignment errors atleast three points in every day. I've checked the config of that port which shows Port blazon 10/100TX, Config Mode Auto. Its set no different to whatsoever of the other ports and withal their pc is experiencing alot of slow down when using the network.

Was this postal service helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • CRC/Alignment errors tin can too exist acquired by a faulty NIC, bad drivers, a bad ethernet cablevision, or a failing switch port. Test those out one-by-one.

  • Is the port on the switch itself set to x/100?  Why not gigabit?

Was this mail service helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • spicehead-y5vyv

  • Your original mail service said 2510Thousand-48 which is a gigabit switch.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • Oh dearest......amateur move...... you may have solved the problem. Seems that 3 out of iv of the switches are 2510g-48 and the other one is a 2610-24, i'm going to switch the particular computer over to the gigabit switch, see if this improves the situation.

On a split up note. I've noticed that when using putty to telnet in so I can then employ the commandshow mac-addressit shows some ports with multiple mac addresses, which i presume is but a switch plugged into a switch, only another ports that are in utilize do not evidence a mac address at all. Any idea why this would happen?

I want to start making a notation of what computer is on what port, but for that I need to observe the MAC to find the IP & Computer name inside DHCP.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • You tin utilise one of whatsoever number of SNMP utilities to map computer to switch port and so along.  I use Lansweeper but Spiceworks tin do this and many other utilities.

When I encounter multiple MAC addresses on a single port, that usually means multiple devices on that port - a switch, reckoner connected to IP phone, etc.

Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down

  • i've just downloaded lansweeper, though a trial. Ive checked all 4 switches within information technology merely it but shows a couple of computers and a server, the residue have nothing against the port other than a mac accost.

It would be skilful to see

Port Number - MAC Address - IP Address - Reckoner Proper noun (description)

on a separate note, i noticed in lansweeper that it has a "last logged on" which is quite useful! Shows who was last logged onto what pc. Is there a manner of showing all pc's with their last logged on user?

Information technology's a registry cardinal, so you could pull the info with a script. A lot of AV direction consoles besides show this info.

Practise you mean under the nugget column?  Your initial browse might not be complete besides.

If it can resolve the IP address to a device, it should testify the device proper name and if you hover over it, it'll show the IP address.
